Composers' Forum

Music Composers Unite!

Hey all, I hope this becomes a popular group. I think its a great way for novices and masters to come and join on very tangible topics of theory, harmony, modal harmony, counterpoint, line writing, songwriting, big band voicings, string articulations, really anything! So here is how I would like to see this happen:

1. A new topic each week, anyone wanting to submit a suggestion for a new one, message me or post here under "assignment suggestions" and I will pull one from the hat and post it each week.

2. Topics should be able to be completed relatively quick. Like transcribe the first 10 choruses of Woody Shaw solo on Little Red's fantasy would be not too cool since we are mostly professionals with not a lot of time to spare

3. Think of this as an ongoing discussion on the topic. The due date will be Sunday Night but the forum will stay open for discussion or late comers

4. there are no style limitations, ie big band or rap, orchestral or rock, its all good as long as the topic is one that benefits all composers in a tangible manner. I reserve the right to not post any topics that I dont think are appropriate

5. Comments and criticizms are expected. Dont take critique too heavy and try to maintain the positive atmosphere that this forum is saturated with. But critiquing is expected and desired so "sounds great" is not a great response hehe =)

post on this thread if there are other rules or thoughts that should be part of this, I am totally open to expanding or contracting depending on atmospheric pressure!. Mostly I hope this is a learning experience and a lot of fun!

thats cool man i would like to keep structure here tho, so we can discuss one week "ways to use minor pentatonic" and another week "F-stop chords on cello" and then "ultra-infrapolation of a single note" or whatever the topics are. I just am wary to have this become just a place to post your stuff but instead offer direction and tangible topics for younger composers. I will try and come up with friendlier language tho!

I think this could be very useful..especially to me. I must admit that I don't have a degree in music, so I always feel I could be faster if I had had a better foundation, but...c'est la guerre.

Yea Scott, I was totally thinking of this as a way to kick my own butt to keep learning stuff and give everyone a shot at learning and teaching from their perspective. I think once we get the general flow moving and grooving it will be a great experience. thanks for joining us man, I look forward for topics you present as well! :)
