I'm back. I lost all my rules so I guess we'll not worry too much about them. The main rule of this group is that you must CITE YOUR SOURCES if you are giving information about composers of the past, particularly if you have a specific opinion that is based on that information. Thanks to Kirstofer Emerig for keeping Musical Scholars Group moving along while I was 'on Sabbatical.'

Topic for discussion: What can early composers teach us?

Here is a compostion by Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1370) called Je Vivroie Liement. We should write as well.

You can watch this video for this amazing and strange composition, it is Marketplace in Ispahan from Alladin Suite by Carl Nielsen, the Danish composer, here is the shortcut, I'll put the score of this amazing movement later, how do you think he wrote this music?

Both György Ligeti and Steve Reich are modern composers (Ligeti died in 2006, and Reich is still here) but in different styles. Ligeti was experimental and avant-garde, and also briefly played with writing electro-acoustic music (inspired by Stockhausen, another modern composer worth looking into). Reich on the other hand, is a minimalist.

Most people will have trouble listening to Ligeti's music (I played a fragment of his chamber concerto to a flautist friend of mine, and she said she felt physically sick!), but it represents music that is trying to push the bounds of what classes as music. If approached with an open mind, it can be found to be, if not pleasant to listen to, at least intriguing and musically highly interesting.
