Now I am here. There is still so much to learn.

Marius I think microtonal is referring to scale systems with more than 12 notes in an octave. like 24 notes from C to C would be microtonal, or any of the asian scales with many semi-tones that dont even necessarily have pure octaves, but not chromatic 12 notes. Now if you are talking about using measures of less than a half step then it is microtonal if it is used as primary tonality and not an inflected bend (like a blues bend)

Hello Simon. I'm pleased to find a group such as this which deals with some of the fundamentals of composition.

I use chromatic scales a lot. Sometime the scale does not fit the rythm and then I use a unit interval a little lower than a chroma to make it fit, e.g. 3/8 of a (diatonic) tone. But the overall song is quite tonal, and mostly diatonic. My question is: does this trick qualify the song as "microtonal" or some such as per the academics in your shelves? Thanks a lot.

Thank you Simon for creating this lovely forum, I'm happy to join it an to be with you, if anybody has any question about the Oriental (middle Eastern) music (Quarter tones, Ornaments or whatever) please don't forget that I'm here and if I get any problem in the orchestration or the harmony I'll never hesitate to ask you,
Love,
Ahmad
