It depends what we mean by ‘Modern Composers’ It is different whether we are into music from the early 20th cent onwards. My favourites were the likes of Mahler, Bartock, Bantock, R Straus, Stravinsky, Vaughan Williams and the like. The only trouble with these guys is that they were born in the 19th cent. My belief is when and where you are born affects your life, especially with regard to influences. We are all subject to influences, the previous generation influences the next and so on; this is why ’Classical’ music has such a sense of continuity. The people who really seem to be on the cusp of breaking out of the mould to become true modernists are the kids and young people of today who are coming at ‘Classical’ music from their beginnings in Rock, acid, Garage and Indi pop. Many of these people become involved in technology, with sample based music, helping to shape the way for the future. One recent man to achieve his Classical epiphany is Goldie (Clifford Joseph Price) on the BBC Proms no less (a place we would all like to get to with our music),with his impressive piece “Sine tempore”. Anyone see that Prom on the TV? If you’ve not heard it, try this

This epitomises the kind of thing I am leaning towards, but unlike Goldie I was educated in the Classical tradition and I think that this is a barrier. Any thoughts on this?
