This is a little OT from organizing composers.
I know there is a lot of controversy for film composers and PROs these days. I belong to SOCAN, because I am a Canadian. I registered with them as both a writer and a publisher: Kaatza Music 30 years ago. But I have been living in the US for almost 10 years and will quite possibly stay here for the rest of my life. I contacted ASCAP to see about joining them, but they say I have to resign from SOCAN first. Seems like a lot of hassle and logistics. SOCAN assures me that I don't need to change PROs, they can continue to collect my royalties no matter where I am living. But I guess that means I get paid in Canadian dollars; maybe not such a bad thing these days :) But then there might be tax implications, as I currently pay taxes in the US, not Canada, revenue from SOCAN would be considered foreign income.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Do I really need to bite the bullet and change over to ASCAP (or BMI)?
