Virtual Soundstage 2 - direction, panning and virtual space plugin

I'd been aware of this some time ago but only just tried it recently: http://www.parallax-audio.com/index.php

Essentially it places your instruments - either midi or real - in a range of virtual recording spaces that, at the very least, is a far more intuitive alternative to panning than anything else I've seen. The direction the instrument is facing, distance from the virtual mics, width etc all changes your mix in real time, allowing you to in theory get that elusive realistic space that's vital for a good orchestral sound. Or you can move the mic into the percussion stand or whatever.

Whether or not it's really good isn't known to me. I've always used Logic's direction mixing plugin and got pretty good results, but creating virtual distance has always been more difficult (in theory you can do this with different stages of reverb levels, but I'm clueless), and the GUI of Virtual Soundstage allows for tiny incremental changes of both direction and distance with ease. Perhaps it's a mickey-mouse approach to knowledge I should have anyway, who cares.

I've tried it with a large project and eventually returned to my original settings, but I think that's more because completely changing a mix at the end of deadline is a bit much for me. It's certainly better for my strings, and I'd like to try it with a new project from scratch.

And there's a free demo with full functionality! Downside is that it resets everything when you close the project, and setting up 60/70 tracks each time prohibits me from using it in that sense. But maybe someone here will find it useful, or knows about it - I think there's other software alternatives to the same concept.

Virtual Soundstage? 'got it, don't use it!

Vienna Instruments MIR? 'got it, don't use it!

There is only one truly great position placing plugin and that is SPAT

Do I have it? No, because it costs a lot of money.

Interesting. What is it that makes VSS bad, or is it just not as good as the expensive thing? It's certainly light on options, but I don't need no stinkin' etc

Dave,

Create an account if you don't already have any of their products and download the free trackcontrol plugin

I use this along with eq and reverb to place instruments.

oh boy, I want Spat, having just tried the demo. Mind you want and having are very different things. Damn you Ray...:-)
