Music Composers Unite!
this is the only piece i've been lucky enough to have recorded by a professional orchestra, as part of the young composer awards, september 2010.
subject matter is the descent into a deep-sea trench, as you slowly sink into the dark waters, you feel peace.
I love everything in this... I am amazed... fantastic tom..
wow, that was something else....beautiful!
lucky you to get a real orchestra to record it! =)
"subject matter is the descent into a deep-sea trench, as you slowly sink into the dark waters, you feel peace." - you can really feel this toward the end...! very nice
awesome work /Daniel
First off Congratulation on the winning the competitions and getting an amazing recording by such a talented group.
The orchestration is quiet good. The piece itself is also very good. Loved the romantic harmonies used and the lushness the piece had overall.
My only small critics I would say is that I wish more instruments beside Oboe and string could have carried the melody more. And I kind of wish there was more made out of a climax.
Other then that, very good job.
yeah, oboes are a bit prevalent in this piece... there are lots of flute solos... and a cor/bassoon solo if you can pick it.. :D also melodies are carried mostly by the viola in this piece... the 1st violins must have been like... "aw maaaan" all they get is non-vib accompaniment :D muahahahah
oh and i found the score too!
Good work, congratulations. You feel the orchestra and you have good instrumental lines, contrasts... but this is the style of 19 th century!!! Find your saunds, you ideas and you can do something really modern and interesting.
yes i was surprised that i was selected as one of the top 10 young composers... for me its just a boring romantic piece! certainly i want to do something new, but also retain the beauty of romantic and baroque music. also integration of the electric guitar and full drumkit into the orchestra is something i'd like to do eventually
no. this is a recording of a real symphony orchestra! every year 10 composers under 25 are selected to be part of the readings, all the composers get recordings and 2 days of workshops with orchestra soloists. This is an opportunity that wouldn't have existed 10 years ago!
Lovely :) super that you got the chance to record this live, sounds great.
I have a weakness for the 19th century and the sound of oboes so you got me hooked with this piece, it has a nice dense sound and a melancholic feel. It certainly can stand its ground in the 21st century as well, this the age of 'if it sounds good it is good' so I wouldn't care too much about what kind of label anyone puts on it.
The moment the first few instruments started playing, my imagination was already playing along with the melody. I loved the dynamic orchestration. You can easily tell that this piece was felt by both the composer and the performers and not merely played as a continuous streak of lines and circles.
I would love to here an extended version! With talent like this, I wouldn't be surprised if one day we all find out that you hired your own private orchestra. Till that day comes, I'll just be here looking forward to hearing an extended version and more epic compositions by you.
