Music Composers Unite!

I  have a commision to fulfil by August 15th. It's my 10th wedding anniversary and I've promised my wife I would compose and record a piece of romantic music for her.  I know I should use piano and lush strings but what other elements contribute to a piece of romantic music?

I would be interested in your ideas.

There is no one formula for writing romantic music. There are however, common traits that can be found in the romantic era of music. A few trails is an increase use of chromatic chords, increase of developing materials, virtuosic playing, ect. To fully understand these traits and where they came from, it would be wise to look at music history around the classical and romantic era of music, as well to look at scores of music from that era which are fairly easy to find due to that they are in the public domain.

Romantic era or "love" music?? If it's the first case read Tyler's comment and if it's the second one listen to some pieces like Edward Elgar's "Salut d'Amour" and try to understand why this music is so romantic.

My approach would be piano, string and flute or oboe. I think woodwind instruments in general carry a romantic tune well.
I'm fine with strings and piano, if you feel comfortable with that medium. The only thing I can think to add, is a bottle of champagne, and some candlelight. I wouldn't hesitate however to write for full orchestra, if that is your bent. I am reminded of Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll,"which was composed under similar circumstances, as a wedding anniversary gift to his wife, wasn't it?....Congratulations to you both, and good luck with the composition...!
The formula is : think what you would like to say to your wife trough the music and compose it :)
