Music Composers Unite!

Hi All,

Attached is the 2nd Movement of my String Quartet in C Major. In condensed Sonata form, this is a slow movement in F Major. At a tempo of 96 crotchets per minute, it runs for about 6 minutes.

The music is a bit dark owing to extensive usage of Chromatic notes. Please listen and offer your comments.

Thanks...

Thanks Anne for the comments. I appreciate the depth in your comments.
I would like to add the following as an explanation:

1. Since I chose abridged Sonata form to make this movement relatively shorter, I had few choices / places for development / introducing elements of interest.

2. However, I tried to introduce some minor elements of interest such as - Secondary development before Recapitulation and in the Coda, Recapitulation in the sub-dominant etc.

3. In general, I prefer shorter movements to keep the interest of the listener.

4. Given the form, I would like to end it here rather than working on it further.

Thanks & Regds...

I hardly spend any time listening to string quartets, so the comments I can make are limited. Although there is a lot going on and it is very complicated, I would really like some sort of melody that I can hang on to - and then hear THAT developed. Instead, without a strong melody from the outset, maybe just fragments, it is difficult to follow where the themes end and where the development begins.

I also think that more ostinato in some of the parts, eg, the bass would have glued the music together.

To me there are some good ideas, but too much swapping and changing and not enough real substance for the listener to grab hold of.

But as I said, quartets are not something I know much about.

But you know it needs very good touch in the keyboard to have good result and to be like the real instrument, hopefully that will work with your friend. And as I said that there is a member here who has this software, he is among my friends here.

For what it is worth I enjoyed a quick listen to it, the chromatiqueness woke me up this morning ;).. I will have it in the player during the day, and will return with a lengthier crique later on :)
Good!
Have a nice day Nalinikanth! (Or if in India, a nice ... afternoon)

Thanks all for the comments...

I was expecting a mixed response as this. I know that is is not that cathcy in the 1st hearing. Maybe it requires a few listening to get a hang of it.
A short theme follows a chordal introduction. The ostinato type bass pattern changes in line with the melody. The second theme is more lyrical in nature. I used short developmental passages before Recapitultion and in Coda to some extent. The Chordal structure and the bass pattern follow through out the movement.

Ahmad: The qlty of Vienna library is excellent. (Incredible!!!)

Simon: Abridged / Condensed Sonata form in my understanding is Sonata form with little / no development like a Sonatina.

Hi all,

By the way, I do not have any Library (GPO, Vienna etc.) except the default sounds provided by Myriad Harmony Assistant. I need advise on what to buy and the cheapest available or any other free sounds on the net.

Thanks in advance...

Simon,

Even GPO costs 200 US$, which is costlier compared to the Myriad HA Notation S/W (about 85 US$) :-)

Hi Anne,

Though I did not make any such Conscious attempt here, sub-Consciously, you will have some Indian intervals/scales/melodic structures creeping in (And I suppose that is why Ahmad likes my music as he can identify it more with music of middle-east).

However, fusion music is not new and has been experimented in many ways in India. Even Indian film music is basically the adaptation of Indian Classical Music with western orchestration techniques (Chords, Preludes, Interludes, Rhythm etc.)

You can visit my Blog http://music-innate.blogspot.com to hear Indian film-type Music.

While I agree with the novelty fusion can create as you said, I would like to compose separately for these systems/], atleast for now:-)

Thanks for the suggestion...

Simon,

Thanks for the info and it looks very cheap compared to others.
However, unfortunately, India is not available in the destination country list.
Shipping to India, if available also entails another 40+ GB Pounds for shipping costs.

What about old Edirol Orchestral?

I think it must be cheap in comparison, and has adequate soundquality.. Anyone knows?

I just googled out that GPO 3rd edition is available at 99.25 GB Pounds (including shipping to India) on www.timespace.com !!!
