Music Composers Unite!

Thought I'd post my first st q piece (the 1st movement of my 1st quartet) which I started 10 years ago but didn't have the skills to finish it so finished 4 years ago(and named "the fury" )and found some people to perform it about 2 years ago! (patience required 4 composers...) Its an angry piece based on the notes abcba. Very thematic.

Astounded again by your ability to hold interest, nice development of thematic material.

I think "The passion" would be a better sub-title.

Thanks Michael. Actually u might be right re the name...Might use the fury for something more furious! Although The 4th movement is probably more furious... Ill post and see what u think re title ...

Thanks Fredrick,

Yes I tend to write a bit densely, and often a bit too orchestral rather than string quartetty!

How does one publish a work? And what exactly does it even mean ? Dumb questions im sure...

Congratulations. This is marvelous. Certainly much better than I can do.

You have very attractive musical ideas that are developed with great effect. You treat the instruments idiomatically and with respect so this would be a joy to perform.

If I would have one criticism, and it is a minor one, I felt that the uniform density of the sound needed to be broken up with passages of less dense sound, such as you did at 5:20.. a really glorious spot in the composition.

I also felt that the little codetta at the end (about 9:59) was highly effective.

Very good work. This should be published.

cool thanks Fredrick

Yes they seem to still exist, ill shoot them an email. Have u published before Fredrick? Have many people here published before?

The score is an absolute mess though. Have you thought about going through, editing it, simply making it look good and readable?

Don't blame me, I'm just a product of my former teacher in which his words are engraved in my very being. lol.

Absolute mess may be a bit strong. There are collisions that need to be addressed. I disagree with a few bowings.

Haha! It sounds like we had the same former wife!

Lol. I'll have to try that. I can't help the way I am. My former wife made me do it that way : )

Its not readable? Ive played it through with friends and its quite readable. Perhaps u need glasses Rod? A few minor collisions with a bow mark and a word are pretty irrelevant I think, (if its still easily readable). Music is about sound not sight so I'd prefer to spend time on writing new notes than making an art masterpiece. So yes ive thought about it , then decided it's easily neat enough. Ill (hopefully) one day leave it to a professional to neaten up...

Well untrue but thanks nevertheless. You are almost certainly the most gifted comedian here Frederick! And you probably could give up your day job!

Yes. Primarily through Kjos and a few local companies. So far I've made enough money to purchase a 6 pack of Miller Lite. So what I'm saying is this; You are probably the most gifted composer on this forum but keep your day job.

Hey Bob, yeah Ive always got a few collisions...When I play through them with my friends, the least of our worries are these collisions. There's a lot more collisions that get played that I didn't write! Gives accidental a whole new meaning really... Bowings Ive realised since taking up the violin a few years ago are changed  by performers whenever they like so I never get overly stressed about them, but you're probably right there's improvements to be made especially as I took up violin just after this piece (and because of the difficulties with knowing my bowing) U a string player Bob?

LOL If I ever publish Fredrick and I earn anywhere near what you've earned through it, you'll be the first person ill post a Miller Lite to. Can you post a half drunk one?
