Permalink Reply by Vincent Avila on November 18, 2011 at 10:33am What is the defining reason you use both?..Example; I use speakers 98% ,but use headphones only on my compositions when I need to tightly focus on the mixing of instruments...then I put the speakers back on to hear how the mix compliments in relations to the air of the acoustics.

both.
Permalink Reply by Kane Aoki on November 18, 2011 at 10:51am When I'm mixing, I'm using my speakers. I use my headphones as my second reference. (working mode)
When I'm listening to music, I'm using my headphones, because I use my Ipod. (non work mode)
When I'm listening to music while taking a break from compositions, I use my speakers. (working mode)
your question is too vague for me :)
Always headphones. Incomparable quality
But get a good pair of headphones!
Also, when you travel, show your music to others (publishers!), headphones are
the only convenient way of presenting your music

Watson on February 3, 2012 at 4:22pm Headphone and speaker mixes can differ quite a lot since the headphones cannot accurately simulate crosstalk, and most systems don't even try to. For those who don't know, crosstalk is the interaction of the left channel with the right ear and vice versa resulting in filtering due to varying phase between sources. When composing, I use headphones (in-ear earphones) to clearly hear what I'm doing, but the final mix is always down through my primary set of speakers. Unfortunately I don't have proper reference speakers, so after the initial mix I always take it and play it on a mid-level sound system.
My advice: always mix on reference speakers.

Just my personal choice :)
Headphones
Permalink Reply by Sam Umar on April 11, 2012 at 10:14am I use headphones for I can get detail element of each musical instrument. It helps me a lot when I am doing my mixing and mastering, especially in capturing the right EQ and dossing sufficient reverb, among others.
Permalink Reply by Mike Leghorn on April 11, 2012 at 2:08pm I use headphones. I've found that I can get much better sound for the money with a headphone system as compared to a speaker system. My system consists of a headphone amp / DAC combo, with a USB input (http://www.headphone.com/headphone-amps/headroom-desktop-amp.php) and the Sennheiser HD-800 headphones.
