Music Composers Unite!

Contest: THE 4 ELEMENTS: DEADLINE TO SUBMIT ENTRIES HAS PASSED, CONTEST CLOSED, VOTING TO BEGIN SOON!!

Hi Composers’ Forum members, as you know, the 4 elements are earth, air, fire, and water. For this proposed contest, you will write a piece of music of no more than 2 minutes duration based on one of these elements. Any instrumentation, any style of music. If the contest is a go, I will give 3 months for interested composers to submit their entries to me, which I will then put up anonymously. Voting will be by the membership of this site. You can submit entries for more than one element. An MP3 or link to a soundcloud/youtube/etc will be necessary. A PDF of the score is highly desirable, but not required. In order for this contest to be a go, 10 composers need to express interest by Sunday, Jan. 21 at 5 pm EST. To express interest, reply to this thread or send me a message. Please indicate in your expression of interest what element or elements you think you might want to compose for (you can change this later). Please note that I do not need any music at this time, just an expression of interest. I have run these contests before, they are a lot of fun and a good way to get feedback about your music from your peers, hope you can join us!

Hi Gav,

Here's the scoop.  I already have the music and song written.  I can even include the sheet music.  Not sure of the genre.  I guess it's probably rock?   For instruments it has Drums, Bass Guitar, Lead Guitar, and Keyboard.  And of course the vocals.  I'm hoping to record the entire piece with me playing each part.  I'm not the greatest musician. I have a YouTube channel and I could post it there.  It will be both music and video of me playing all the instruments.

One caveat is that I'm not certain that I'll get it all recorded in time.  Although with the 3 months time limit I should be able to do this.  The main thing is that because I'm playing each part, and because I'm not all that great on all these instruments, it might take me quite a few recordings to get something presentable.   But I'm willing to give it a shot.

Actually getting it all on video is the hard part.  I should definitely have a fairly decent audio recording by then if nothing else.

Hi James, songs are permitted. If you can get it on Youtube, which allows you to create a link that plays back at a given start-point, then there's no need to split up the piece or re-compose it, you just create 4 separate links, one for where in the piece each element begins. We can also include the entire piece along with your entry so that anyone who wants to hear the whole work can do so. I suppose other music sites like Soundcloud may have a similar link-to-start-point feature. If you don't have such access, then I can upload it to my Youtube account and create the links, I just need to know from you what the start points are. I will delete it off my Youtube after the contest ends. Let me know if you have any additional questions or would like to be added to the list of entrants

Good enough James, I will go ahead and add you to the list of entrants! Just please let me know if you have to drop out by Sun. Jan 21 at 5 pm EST. We now have 19 entrants, with 6 commits to Water, 4 commits to Earth, 5 commits to Fire, 3 commits to Air, 1 commit to either Water or Air, 1 commit to either Fire or Water, 1 commit to either Fire, Water, or Earth, and 5 general commits (can be changed)

I’m in! Johnranderson12@gmail.com
Hi Gav Thanks for all of your efforts I will give it a shot maybe one for wind and one for fire thanks again, larry

I'm interested. Maybe about earth and air elements. Thanks for the opportunity.

Hi Gav, HNY to you. I'm in.  Can we mix elements... like earth and water

and write something muddied?  just kidding

I'm willing too.One month is enough.

Thanks John, Larry, and Emily! We now have 22 entrants, with 6 commits to Water, 5 commits to Earth, 5 commits to Fire, 3 commits to Air, 1 commit to either Air or Fire, 1 commit to either Water or Air, 1 commit to either Fire or Water, 1 commit to either Fire, Water, or Earth, and 6 general commits (can be changed). NOTE PLEASE DO NOT SEND ENTRIES IN YET. Emily, I saved the MP3 you sent and am going to delete it off your post. Later on, I will need another copy of the PDF, there is a certain way I want the file edited for anonymity.

If there's still room, I'm in! And I choose Air.

I'll join, and I'm thinking of going with water right now. I agree that three months for a maximum 2-minute piece is somewhat extreme, but I suppose it'll help really perfect those two minutes.

I'll join! I'll choose water.

Thanks Emily, I missed that link, but will catch up to it eventually

Okay. Sorry for that. I saw another link to a submission, so I was not sure.
