Music Composers Unite!

“Heat” - DEADLINE HAS PASSED, VOTING TO BEGIN SOON

Summer is the hot season and many CF members are running the AC to stay comfortable. The proposed contest is to write a piece which invokes, is inspired by, or uses sound to convey the idea of heat. Any instrumentation, any style is allowed. The piece can be as short as you like, or up to 7 minutes. An mp3 file or link to a specific song on another site is required, and a PDF is strongly desired, but not required. One submission per composer, and voting will be done by the members of this site. I usually give about 2 months for the composition time once the competition starts. Specific details/dates will be provided if enough composers express interest in the contest. You can express interest by either replying to this thread and saying something along the lines of “I’m interested,” or by sending me a PM on this site. If you want to PM me and are not already friends with me, just send me a friend request and I will accept. In order to run the contest, we need to get 10 composers to express interest by July 13th at 10 pm EST.

Count me in.

At first upon seeing the topic I balked, because I had no idea how I'd even go about depicting something like heat in music. But after trying out a bunch of different ideas, I think I've hit upon one that might work out well.  Eager to try it out to see  how it goes. :-)

Dunt dunt... dunt dunt.. dunt dunt- dah duh ..... Welcome to Mission Impossible 5

Gav,  what hat did you pull this one out of?

You can put me down for a 'take a stab at it', I always like a challenge, but dang- I don't even

know where to begin processing this one. We'll have to 'fire' up some creativity for this  : > /     RS

So here I am in the middle of winter fast approaching solstice.

Shivering with anticipation.

Thanks for responses, all! With H.S., Roger, and Bob, we now have 3 commits, so 7 more are needed for the contest to be a go. BTW, I think the topic readily lends itself to any number of possible approaches - playing in a very low register? Playing excitedly? Playing slowly and rising up the register? For those who write for multiple instruments, having one instrument be fire and another be smoke? Writing slowly, and smokily, like Gershwin’s Summertime? For electronic composers the possibilities seem to me to be even more open. See OP for ways you can express interest in entering. Deadline to express interest (but not to produce an entry) is July 13th at 10 pm EST.

@Mike: perhaps a warm fire in the fireplace would be your ticket to this contest? ;-)

@Gav: I thought about writing an atmospheric piece involving a hot, sweaty summer day with buzzing mosquitos and running AC. (Though I'm actually working on a different idea right now.)

I'll give it a shot.
