there is a new free notation program out there that is pretty good. It can be found at www.noteflight.com
It is unique because it is based completely in your browser.. that is, there is nothing to download and install. You create an account and your compositions are saved on their site.
It is no where near as complete as Finale or Sibelius, but I really think that it IS better than most other free options. I think that it is better than Finale notepad was.. even before it stopped being free.
After you compose something, it is very easy to share with others and you can even make it where others can edit what you have written and do collaborative work. It can print, and export midi, MusicXML or audio files.
