Composers' Forum

Music Composers Unite!

All,

There's a new Facebook group called "Film Scoring Practice".  Each Monday a new clip will be posted and you are invited to complete a score by the following Sunday.  They just posted their first one and I decided to give it a go...  Thought it might be of interest to others here...

This sounds exciting!  I don't use Facebook - is there any other way to see your clip/score?

Oh, I haven't posted anything yet.  I'll share here, if there is interest!

Here's what I meant:  I clicked on the link you posted above, but I can't open it because I don't do Facebook.

Yes, I don't think you can view the group without signing up for Facebook.

Joined. Thank you, John!

OT, but congratulations on winning the composition contest at Daves forum, John--well done.

Our own Julie Harris came in second--a GREAT job was done by all!

Thanks Bob https://soundcloud.com/bob-morabito

Just to set the record straight about the composition contest at Dave's forum.  My piece didn't come in 2nd, it came in 3rd.  However, after hearing John's brilliant piece "Interlude", which rightfully came in first, I honestly don't see how anyone could have voted for my "Chaccone"!

I know I'm veering from the original topic of this thread, but I didn't want anyone to think my piece came in 2nd!  Second place went to "Ferryman's Song" by gx.

OT--I misread Daves post--my apologies Julie , and to gx also for getting the places wrong.

Youre piece was really good and I enjoyed it very much, along with all the other pieces :)

If anyone wants to hear Julie's, and rest of the pieces, they're here:

Thanks for the kind words, Bob and Julie!

I did an eight-minute film scoring tutorial that I posted on HitRecord last year that seem to be helpful to many new film composers. The difference between "writing a song" for a film and "writing a score" for a film, that enhances what is seen (visual movement) and heard (usually dialog) on screen seems to be confusing to some. Tempo maps, Spotting Sessions, Cues, Sound Design verses Film Scoring, Storyboard Scoring and Orchestral Sketches are all part of the Film Composer's realm and not the Song Writer's realm. I hope you find this video useful as it walks through the basic steps in the art of film scoring.
