Music Composers Unite!

I actually started this piece sometime last year, but I recently started working on it again when I was having some trouble coming up with new percussion ensemble ideas and concepts. A side note for this piece would be to ignore everything in the intro before the low triplets. I'm trying to make it more of a dark piece and the beginning doesn't really flow very well with the rest of the piece. 

Anyway... Since I've never written for strings and winds before, I just thought I'd ask for opinions on what I've completed so far to see if it's even worth finishing. Thanks! :)

Don't discount the first part there are some nice ideas in there! 

 

I think your concern about flow could be a result of the transitions to each section.  An example would be after your triplet with the flute solo, the horns enter and the melody goes into the strings, why lose the triplet ostinato?  It wouldn't need to stay predominant, but the continuation of the pattern would help carry the listener and avoid a "blocky" approach.

 

The piece is certainly worth developing further.

It's just strange for me going from writing percussion ensemble pieces for like six years straight, to trying to write something calm for orchestra. I think there are still some percussive elements to it that have bled through. haha. But I definitely plan to fix the transitioning throughout the piece as I develop it a bit more.

a few things to watch:

make sure the 1st violins get a break from fast notes (perhaps have the 2nd violins be up front?), don't want to wear them out, which is hard to do, but not impossible.

 The beginning,  the rests are kinda iffy to me. I think you could have a better way of opening. The rests really kill the momentum (which is essential in minimalism)

Clark you tard. Those aren't violins. They're giant violins. And yes, that's the correct name for them. Giant Violins. Or viola or something... And I plan to redo the beginning. Right now it's just rand-o crap I threw together in the beginning last year. Get a job. Love you Clark. :)

I enoyed your music, Allison - how about posting the score for us to look at?

Thanks! :) I don't know... The score is ewwy and would probably make orchestral composers cringe. lol

You are undertaking something quite ambitious.  How did you write this?  Did you used a notation program to sort out the parts?

I think that we would all like to see a score at some point!
