Hello Everyone,
I'm new to composing. I was formerly in a metal band and I just couldn't tour anymore. I was wondering what everyone here thought of Logic Studio? I've been working in Garageband a lot and love Mac. I would never stray. Is Logic worth it?

Well worth it in my opinion - I've been using it happily since 2002.

Personally I wasn't too sure about Logic 8 and have stuck with 7 which still requires a dongle - though the general weight of opinion seems to be that it is a further improvement.

I dont use Logic, I use the other Mac only DAW - Digital Performer. But I would say that Logic or DP - either one are on par with each other in terms of features and benefits and both blow garage band out of the water. :-)

I have a page bookmarked that seems to contain a lot of reviews and comparisons:
http://www.tweakheadz.com/Sequencer2.html

I haven't got round to looking at it yet so I don't know how good it is, but it might prove useful.

Personally I'm a huge Mac fan but only recently bought my iMac. I'm still running Sonar on a Windows laptop but fully intend to move to Mac Pro when I can afford it. I still haven't decided which DAW to use.

Edit: Just noticed that page is not really up to date. Anyone know of a similar thing with more recent info?

can you explain what DAW is? Thanks!

Digital Audio Workstation: Logic, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Cubase and Sonar are the main ones used by pros

Logic is great. Been using it since version 7 and absolutely love it. Logic is definitely worth it.

I have been using Logic 8 for year now and it pretty much serves all my needs. It does however require a lot of patience and I found that the One to One sessions that Apple run in their stores quite helpful as there are often many ways in the program of achieving the same goal. I was completely new to DAWs when I got it and just took my time. I also have Ableton Live 8 on trial at the moment and that offers a different perspective. I think Logic 8 represents excellent value for money though especially with all the plug ins.

Thanks! It looks like I'm going to make the investment!

You won't regret it. The guys I met at various Apple stores were very helpful both in terms of Logic but also the best hardware / Mac spec etc and other third party stuff.

In 2008, I moved from Cubase to Logic Studio and never regretted it. Still very curious if the next version will take more benefit of multiprocessors.

Hi Dallas,
I've been working with logic for over 6 years now (mac always and forever) and while all Apps have their foibles, I would say if you enjoy Garage Band, there's never been a better time to move up to the Pro Application. Logic Studio has a new 'friendlier' front end to the old logic 7, which makes it easier to learn and indeed move up from GarageBand. It's also cheaper than it's ever been - roughly half what Logic Pro 7 was! There is fairly steep learning curve initially, and there is much to learn, but you get a bunch of great instruments, sound libraries and effects to use in the box, and in my opinion it's great for working with live recordings. If you do go for it- a word of advice - a great deal can be learned simply by going through all the shortcut 'quick-key' commands and finding out what they do - many of the funky things that help you work speedily and creatively can be discovered this way.
Good luck with your music,
dan
