Hi all composers , does anyone knows how to calculate the overtones ( or partials) from a single note ??

I have a vst sonogram that shows me all the frequencies in Hz, but how do I see each frequency in notes , so I can write them down in notation ( as for ex. Gerard Grisey did ) . I have websearched a lot but with no result . Plase help if anyone knows !!!  Caj.

Hello Caj,

Suppose you play a note with pure frequency F in Hz. Then 2F, 3F, 4F etc. are its overtones. Such sounds well resonate with F.

Also imporant are frequencies F/2, F/3, F/4 etc. They resonate with F too, since F is their overtone.

So, for A440 (note A, 440 Hz), the sounds with frequencies 880, 1320, 1760 etc. are overtones. They are not necessarily pure notes of your instrument, since most instruments have a tempered sound scale. But many different notes have many overtones that are approximately equal, and this is why we hear modal chords as the bases of tonal harmony.

Be well!

Andrew

Thanks Andrew ! That is also what I have come to ( if I understand you real ) . I shall try to write down the whole overtone serie by hand ,the 1/4 and 1/6 approximately . It´s the contrast between the pure notes and 1/4 notes that is so interesting for me .

Keith Kramer gave me the advice to try Max/Msp , but that program locked my computer totally (windows 7 64 bit) .

Be well !  Caj .

Caj:

If you are into pitch generators, oscillators and the like download a program called SuperCollider. It uses smallltalk for its language, so there is a bit is a learning curve, but just cruise the help files.

This is a really difficult program for me , have worked several hours and don´t get a sound from it ( I have read  in the manual and looking at some tutorials on you tube) . But I won´t give up . Caj.
