Composers' Forum

Music Composers Unite!

Hi there!

For a college project I had to write a short cue for a horror film. Due to copyright restrictions I cannot post the whole scene on this forum, but the movie is entitled Timber Falls. In a few months the actual composer of the film (Henning Lohner, The Ring) will review all of the students' works, so wish me good luck!

Anyway, tell me your opinion! :)
Some parts end very abrupt; this is because there are abrupt transitions in the scene.

Wow...sounds great!=)... I was just playing the video game 'batman arkham asylum' and even though this is intended for a horror film, it would also fit that genre very well=) One small thing!...the reverb - sounds a little dry at times. Might be intended though, but at around 0:31 - where everything goes into a massive crescendo and suddenly stops, it sounds a little dry. Also at the end.  Anyways, very well done!

what vst's do you use?

I was shocked when I saw this was a cue for The Ring.  The reason being is that I clicked on the mp3 without reading what you have stated and listened for only a few seconds I then decided I should read what you said beforehand to know what the cue was for.  I immediately got the impression of looking at the overhead view of the car driving in a lonely road in The Ring.  I don't know if it sounds similar to The Rings music or not but the whole piece definitely fits what I remember of the movie.

My one complaint is that I felt the baby in the beginning didn't really have a place there.  I would feel it would distract me from the scene if I heard it as part of the music.

Overall though, very good and accurate to the movie.

Thanks a lot! I'll refine the reverb on that particular part. I used EWQL with Apple Logic 8.

Actually the cue is for a movie called Timber Falls which was originally scored by the same composer that wrote the music for The Ring (Henning Lohner), but the piano and the strings playing a tremolo may obviously make it sound quite similar to The Ring's score. I haven't yet heard the original Timber Falls score though, to avoid being influenced by it.

The baby is just there because in that scene there's that evil guy showing a dead fetus to another man. I thought it might be appropriate to put in a crying baby to evoke the man's memory of it (although fetuses usually don't cry).

Great stuff, especially like the string sections. That discordant crescendo is ace too! Feel the brass section could maybe have a longer release / more reverb, but that's just personal taste I guess.

Would love to hear the full piece one day!
