Composers' Forum

Music Composers Unite!

Hi

I have just joined the forum.  I am a composer - mainly classical / full orchestral.

Has anyone out there purchased and used EWQLSOPP.

I ahve just purchased it and heck what an installation that was - very difficult and 28 discs to load with a total of 194GB of samples.

I have it fully installed but I am having immediate trouble loading and playing library sound samples.

i am happy to share my issue in depth if anyone out there has the software and is interested to try and help me.

James

Just good luck from me James. You must have a beast of a PC!

Ok everyone I sat up most of the night last night - it's now 10am here in Mount Pleasant and I am surprised I am up after going to bed at 4.30am.

Thanks to Raymond and Kevin for your replies.

The reason i stayed up was to try to nail this EWQLSOPP install with East West in US.

I HAVE NOW DONE THAT - thanks to Adrian James in East West's soundsonline support team.  Adrian had great patience with a technical novice like me and was able to ride over my frustrations.

yes Raymond I have completed the install now with all the latest software and yes I am running 24bit samples.  i run with 8GB Ram.

This is really Day 1 for me now with this software - i am excited and here i go.

I take it that you will not be hooking it up to a notation programme then?

Hi everyone. Especially to Kevin and Raymond who have replied to my thread.

Clearly this is a Composers Forum and not a software support sight however I just happened to have joined the forum at a time when i have just installed EWQLSOPP.

To confirm again i use Finale for composition work and then Cubase Studio 5 for mixing and mastering.  Other than HalionOne soundbanks that came wih Cubase EWQLSO is the only other sound library i have.

I tend to be writing full orchestral stuff - a mix of classical and film style music.

As I replied to Kevin and Raymond recently I am learning at present how to get around stuff like:

          -   I have 25 instrument channels on Cubase in my current Piano Concerto and I have a trumpet I would like to mute over a section of the piece.  I dont know how to do a simple task like this.

           - I have no idea how to do articulations having read manuals and on line stuff - bamboozles me.

I am definitely a composer not a computer "geek" however these things are very important to be able to express oneself properly on the pc.

If anyone can offer assistance to me or point me in the right direction on some of these issues I would be very thankful.

You can assign mute automation on the trumpet channel. Right click on the channel, select show automation. Click on volume and there should be a drop down menu, select mute. Then, you tap R (read enable) until it turns green. On the grid, you will see a grey line. Tap the line starting from the section you want the trumpet to be muted, you tap again just on the right of the first dot, then you drag it to the top. That will activate the mute (indicated as "on" at below the Mute category). To deactivate it (dis-mute), you can tap the line again on the point in which you want the trumpet to be dis-muted and drag it downward.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Sam

Thanks for the reply Sam.

I think the word mute might be confusing everyone - the trumpet mute I am talking about is the actual mute you stick in the end of the trumpet not simply turning of the trumpet sound on cubase.  I want the trumpet to be played as a muted trumpet.

If this is not the case then I have misunderstood your reply Sam.

Oh I see what you meant, James. So please, disregard my former reply.
In this case, I don't know how to change from trumpet to muted trumpet other than just select different instruments from the library (in my case that would be Miroslav Philarmonik).

No probs Sam.

Thanks for your help though.  Appreciated.

Hi James.

I came across your post here by chance and thought I'd chime in to offer some help. Unfortunately the EWQL orchestra doesn't a have a muted articulation for the solo trumpets. You'd need to get one of the brass-dedicated libraries for that (or a library from somewhere else). Sample libraries do tend to do this - a muted solo trumpet is not an unusual articulation choice. There is a muted articulation in the 2-trumpet instrument, though.

As far as articulation changes go, it's a very important technique to know if you're using sample libraries, but really quite simple. The method is called keyswitching (not to be confused with any sort of musical key change/modulation!) When you load an instrument into Play all the available articulations are loaded simultaneously, and one of them is audible by default - usually a standard sustained articulation. You change between them by sending a note to the instrument; this note is well outside the playable range of the instrument, for example: 3 octaves below the lowest possible sounding note (or, 3 octaves above it if it is already in a low range.) The most elegant and sensible way to use this system in a sequencer (like Cubase 5 Studio) is to have TWO midi channels running to Play. One contains the musical material, and another contains the keyswitch triggers (if any). Note: it is not necessary to define the articulation for every note played: once you switch articulations, Play will keep to that articulation until you tell it otherwise.

See page 104 of the EWQL Orchestra Manual.

I hope this makes some sense - let me know if it doesn't.

Cheers

Well thanks for the reply. You have hit right on three m ark for me. I do not understand what you have said. I do not understand keyswitching at all. I have read about it but can't understand it. I will read p104 and with your help try top come to grips with it.

Oh, dear... Well, I don't mind helping at all. If I had Cubase 5 Studio I'd send you some examples...but I have Cubase 6.5 and it doesn't allow saving for other versions of Cubase. I'll try think of a practical way to help! I must say, I do suspect there are underlying misunderstandings of the technology at play here. As you said, this isn't a technical forum, so if you want help via private messages that's ok with me. (Unless others are interested in the thread, in which case keep it public!)

Well I would truly love some help from you. Its Sat night here now and we have relatives staying and busy tomorrow. I will contact you Monday evening our time if that's OK.
