Composers' Forum

Music Composers Unite!

Hello fellow composers!

We have decided to start the process of removing the 'groups' here.  We see this as a good thing; every discussion going on in the groups will eventually be replaced in the Forum area.  So you can talk about the same stuff, just in a different place.

This will allow more people to see what people are talking about and to participate without having to join a group.  We may keep some groups, or even restart others; we'll just see what happens.  But most groups will be deleted and new forum categories started accordingly!

We have to figure out what to do with some of those great long discussions, though.  We'd rather not delete a lot of content, but move it instead.  We'll take this process slowly.

Thanks!

I dont know what kind of software/board/page/what-have-you you are using here, but...

a lot of places have a service where you can get stuff "archived", and they "plop!" it into a big HTML file for you... you then can post a link to a page that is the archive... it usually will have some search function to it, too. I dont know if this type of software/service you use has this ability, but...

if it did, it would solve your problem for you?
Hi Sean,

Thanks for the thought! It wouldn't solve the problem, but it might help! I'd prefer to have the threads unchanged - meaning that you can respond directly to them. But archived could be an acceptable compromise. We can do that here, but it does it for the WHOLE forum. No way to do it in parts - at least that I know of...

nothing is impossible. In a former life, i was a software engineer. I'm not an internet fluent programmer, but... thats not the point, the point is this...

my computer is sitting here, and each and every time i come onto this site, without fail... somehow, my computer knows how many discussions, groups, etc etc are going on... and unless you close a thread... there is a database being read.

There's no reason another program (script, really...) could be executed... that would "read" the topics in a given group, and "read" all the posts under it... and posting each "post" in a regular forum thread...

it really wouldnt be that big of a program (script).

you end up with a forum that was loaded up with discussions and posts under it... a duplicate of the group,

done once for each group, bang.

then you can close the group(s)...

any "script kiddie" should be able to handle it, quite "handily" *chortle*... the only thing is inducing a script-kiddie to do something useful instead of re-introducing havoc on the internet. WHich is another matter entirely...

in an other vein?

in China, they needed to remove a MOUNTAIN, literally... and put all the dirt in the place where they were making a gigantic earthen dam, one of the largest the world had seen. WIth no money or equipment, it was deemed impossible by the experts... so, one million chinese workers went with spoons and baskets.... and moved it in several years. A mountain disappeared, and one of the world largest earthen dams was erected, simultaneously. It was considered a bizarre achievement.

i still say its easier to just geta script kiddie to automate the chore...

a tiny script program can easily read posts and simultaneously post the posts its reading in the new forum location...

you cant seriously expect me to believe that with all thebrain power on this site, theres not ONE musician composer who also knows how to run a website, and execute scripts like he's using a Cminor scale? hard to believe...

ironically, the ONLY thing standing in our way, really... is the dang "security" to prevent one from piddling around with scripts to GET at the text database that exists driving this forum... its really a simple structure, data wise... if people were content to USE programs on the internet, instead of finding ways to screw it up for everybody, we would not have this problem, LMAO

ask around for a script programmer... even if you had to "feed" the script program the threqad sone by one, if it just read as it posted straight thru, one man could be done in a couple of hours...
If that's the way it's going to be (weep, sob, etc), can we have a discussion forum called "Harmony and the Rudiments of Music Theory" please?
darn it, simon... I cant swim very well, but I was enjoying being allowed in the big peoples pool to doggie paddle around... if you put a kiddie pool in, I wont be allowed in the big peoples pool anymore, LMAO...

Hi Chris--

I dont know if this is possible but why not keep the old groups, but make them invisible, and just provide links to the discussions you want saved?

They can be closed for replies, in the closed, "archived" invisible groups, yet able to be read when clicking on the link.

And if someone wants to quote something from them they do a simple copy and paste, from there into the forum.

just a thought:)

of course, your right...

I havent been into this for years, and the "web guru" we used back then, i couldnt now tell you what state he lives in... plus, stuff was a lot eaasier back then to talk to the IT guys.

Yet, this is not impossible, its just problematic,

You are right about ning not putting out API's of course, but thats just right now, according to the website. They are talking about "shortly" getting out the API call with script examples... its a pity, because there's coammands for retrieving whole threads, and creating entries... but right now only for blogs.

they list what you cannot do, naturally for here, specifically not forums and groups... I'm not sure if that might not come out shortly or later with the new APIs. IE, they give you the APIs about to come out, then in there it says you cant do forums and discussions... I wonder if thats just for now.

if you have any experience with scripting languages (I hate them with a passion) and you sound like you do... this book here...

http://www.schrenk.com/recommended_reading/recommended_reading.php?...

seems highly reccomended. I know, it would seem like an impossible task... but, if you read the comments left by the programmers that left them... they specifically say its still really hard just using the examples "unless your just building a simple TARGETED bot/scraper" which ironically, sounds like what you need here. You only need it to work in this ONE instance... and, since your not building one to scour the web, and get kept out by other admins... it makes it possibly do able.

I know the search engines freely real all our text here in the forums... I found THIS post I'm answering to right now, when i searched for scrapers. I bet they read the groups too? Unless you have them set for privacy or something (I maintain a teensy forum, only as a backup for core members of my other site)

this isnt the only forum I'm a member of... on my OTHER forum, I've been there for years, and I have "blinky stars", and we're all pretty tight. I have access to a "web guru" there, I can run this by HIM, and see what he says. That guys an IT professional for years now. I'm not saying he's better than you, I'm just saying he's so far a heck of a resource (though I never asked for anything like this before, but he did all the custom scripting for our little backup forum i run... nothign THIS complicated, but, we might get lucky)

cant hurt to ask him... and I'll keep looking... maybe HE cant do it, but can ask around.

would it still be useful, if it were possible to just put all the posts from a discussion under one text file? You guys prolly have storage space here to put it, and it would be like a... single huge html page... wouldnt a text-search work to find stuff?

i realize thats primitive, but, you'd have all the posts and a way to search key words... let me see what i can find...
Not too sure what he's been smoking, but it was a great story about the Chinese Mountain. I enjoyed it immensely.

What in the world are you smoking? Its not a simple thing to create a website scraper and parser without any type of API into the data. Its a pretty large task to automate it and have it work correctly, I have built website scrapers before and its a nightmare of working with regular expressions trying to find re-usable anchor points. And then it still all has to get entered by hand since, again, there is no API to the ning.com system nor do we have access to the database. "script kiddies" lol, you really have a lovely way about you, try and reign in the epeen sir, its not needed here.

maybe this is what you need...

http://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/content-archive-tool-coming

it saays its no longer "coming" that it is already here (there...) you know whaat I mean.

I dont know if this is only for blogs, but... if it does it, it says it saves up to the last 10,000 items, and that if you need more, to emsil them and they can set that up...
this is a free service...

http://www.savemyning.com/faq.html

they offer to backup your NING, and place it into a "static" website (you cant post, but its fully useable and searchable, except you cant post)

that website they put it on, is FREE, and their ADS they place on it pay for itself.

if it worked, you could just put a LINK to where all the old data was... and they do it all fpr free...
Ehh... this might be just a dumb question, but...Why not just close the groups for new people, leave the groups as they are and together decide that all new discussions are to be posted in one place?
