Music Composers Unite!

I will be the first one to say that J.S. Bach is my favorite overall composer, Partita No.2, Chaccone is my favorite piece, but what specifically makes his music great, influential, and worth all the recognition? How would you explain this to a musician and a nonmusician?

A few years ago, I tried to write an atonal piece. I posted the result here. It was a failure. It was ill conceived, poorly constructed (hmmm, could be said of most of what I write), and not really atonal. But then, my heart wasn't in it. That's the thing. I'm not opposed to "new music". But my heart isn't in it. Music it too much of an emotional experience for me to analyze it too much. I either like it or I don't. Every once in a while something will grow on me, but not often.
