Music Composers Unite!

Hey all,

I'm looking to upgrade my studio's midi keyboard controller. I come from a background in piano, so I've been using a Yamaha P-95, a digital piano with weighted keys but nothing in the way of sliders, rotary pots, or even modulation/pitch wheel.

Now as I'm looking for a keyboard more robust and well-suited for the world of working with midi and virtual instruments, I'm wondering: those of you that have keyboards with aftertouch, is it worth it? Do you find yourself using it often? It seems like a great feature to have, but maybe it's one of those things that you just pay extra money for and then never use.

I'd love to hear what your experience with aftertouch has been like.

My midi keyboard, which goes back to the Middle Ages, doesn't have it. I have no idea what it does, but so far haven't missed it.

Thanks for your input, Michael. Aftertouch is MIDI data sent when pressure is applied to a keyboard after the key has been struck, and while it's being held down or sustained. You can route it to control volume, vibrato, or whatever else you want. While this isn't something you'd need for a piano sampler, the function could be very helpful when dealing with strings and winds.

I will be upgrading to a full size midi board at some point in the near future. Yeah, especially with strings, I sure could use more control.

I would say it's worth it, as anything that you can add while playing in stead of with envelopes or other means is better in my book. Also, I haven't looked at them recently, but don't keyboards other than entry level models have it, anyway? If you are looking for models that have ACT capabilities I think there is a good chance they will have aftertouch as well.
